I PUFFINI DELL'ADRIATICO di G. Pascoli Translation by F.

I PUFFINI DELL'ADRIATICO

Tra cielo e mare (un rigo di carmino
recide intorno l'acque marezzate)
parlano. È un'alba cerula d'estate:
non una randa in tutto quel turchino.

Pur voci reca il soffio del garbino
con ozïose e tremule risate.
Sono i puffini: su le mute ondate
pende quel chiacchiericcio mattutino.

Sembra un vociare, per la calma, fioco
di marinai, ch'ad ora ad ora giunga
tra 'l fievole sciacquìo della risacca;

quando, stagliate dentro l'oro e il fuoco,
le paranzelle in una riga lunga
dondolano sul mar liscio di lacca.

THE SHEARWATERS OF THE ADRIATIC SEA

Between sky and sea (a carmine line
cuts around the marbled waters)
they speak. It's the cerulean dawn of the summer:
not a gaff-sail in all that blue.

  But
the puff of the wind Garbino carries noises
with idle and tremulous laughter.
They are the shearwaters: on the mute waves
this morning chatter hangs over.

It sounds like dim gossip, in the calm,
of the sailors, which now and then arrives
through the faint lapping of the undertow;

when, silhouetted in gold and fire,
the small smacks in a long line
  swing on the sea smooth as lacquer.
